Primary market refers to the market in which new securities are sold directly to investors from the issuer. The most common primary market mechanism is an initial public offering (IPO).

Companies, governments or institutions issue stocks or bonds in order to obtain funding. These entities borrow money from primary capital market through these financial instruments.
